Tech Support: Sound/Audio Troubles in Windows XP

October 29th, 2008

If you are having audio/sound issues, please take the following steps before submitting a help request or bug report.

Quite often, sound/audio issues can be corrected by adjusting settings on your computer. Have you checked to make sure that you’re configured properly?

For Windows XP:

  1. Click “Start”

  2. Select Control Panel
  3. Go to Sound/Audio Devices
  4. Click the “Volume” tab and ensure that your volume is adjusted properly
  5. Click the “Audio” tab
    • Default Device (speakers)

      • Turn all but your Wave and Master Volume settings down or mute them

      • If you are running a podcast or some other loopback feature, make sure the “input monitor” radio button is muted
    • Sound Recording Device (microphone)
      • Click on “Volume”

      • Check the microphone level – turn it up or down as needed
  6. If your sound is too high or too low
    • Click “Advanced”

    • Select/deselect “1 Mic Boost”

If these steps do not help you, please provide specific details as to what issues you are having with sound, including going to http://www.testyourvoip.com/ and providing the results of that test, in a detailed technical help request.

How about adding troubleshooting tips for “cannot connect to login server”? I’m behind a proxy here at work but wanted to listen to the chat.
