Server Updates… Good, Bad, or Indifferent?

December 22nd, 2008

Most titles have regular updates of their servers. Sometimes it’s daily, sometimes it’s weekly… and sometimes randomly sporadic.

I’ve noticed sometimes that you can’t tell anything has been done, and other times there is a full list of update notes related to the down time. And I’m not talking major game updates… I’m talking about hot fixes or server restarts. And while I’m on the topic, why don’t they tell us they’re just restarting the servers? Seriously, a fresh reboot never hurt anyone, we’ll totally understand!

So my point here… rather, my question… should down times be structured? Same time, same day, without fail (emergencies excluded)? And should they be daily reboots, with updates as needed, or weekly/monthly/bi-monthly?

I guess I’m curious what others think. I’m personally a daily sort of person. While highly annoying, it’s also a high level of maintenance and attention to quality for the players. I can handle an hour down if it will make the other 23 hours more stable and playable for everyone. Am I alone in this thought? Am I one of those weird people who enjoys allowing game developers extra time to get it right?

Maybe I just need to QQ and keep playing?!?
